On the quiet night of August 12, 2025, at 11:55 pm, the world bid farewell to a true heroine, Lt Asha Sahay (Bharti Choudhury), who passed into eternal life at her home in Patna, Bihar, surrounded by her loving family.

At 97, she was a living bridge to one of the most stirring chapters of World War II history—a warrior of the Rani Jhansi Regiment, the all-female combat unit of the Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army). Her life was not merely a page in the story of the Indian independence movement but a blazing testament to the courage, sacrifice, and unyielding spirit that drove our nation’s fight for freedom.

Lt Sahay’s journey was one of defiance and inspiration. As part of the Rani Jhansi Regiment, led by the indomitable Captain Lakshmi Sahgal, she and many young women like her shattered the chains of gender, caste, and religious divides, standing tall as a symbol of Indian women’s strength in the battle against colonial oppression. With every step, she and her comrades challenged the might of Hukumat-i-Britannia, igniting a fire of resistance that inspired countless others to join the struggle to end imperialism. Their courage was a clarion call, proving that the heart of a nation’s fight for liberty knows no boundaries.

The road to India’s freedom was paved with sacrifice, and Azad Hind Fauj’s contributions remain a towering yet often under-celebrated force in that victory. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s revolutionary vision gave birth to the INA, a movement that reshaped the destiny of a nation and its armed forces. The INA trials of 1945 and the mutinies of 1946 shook the foundations of British rule, hastening the collapse of the empire and its colonial grip across the world as British Indian armed forces were used to enforce colonialism. Lt Sahay and her fellow warriors were at the heart of this seismic shift, their bravery fueling a legacy that would echo far beyond India’s borders.

The Indian Freedom Movement was a saga of heroism, solidarity, and renunciation, woven together by patriots who dared to dream of a free nation. The courage of these women and men, who faced unimaginable odds with unwavering resolve, must never fade from our memory. Nearly eight decades since India’s independence on August 15, 1947, their sacrifices remind us that freedom is a hard-won gift, earned through the blood and bravery of those who refused to bow to imperialism.

As we mourn the loss of Lt Asha Sahay, today let us also celebrate her extraordinary life. Her valor, her spirit, her resilience, and her legacy will forever shine as a beacon, guiding future generations to be inspired by those who fought for our freedom. May her memory energize us to carry forward the torch of Ittehad, Itmad aur Qurbani, (Unity, Faith and Sacrifice - motto of Azad Hind Fauj), she so fiercely embodied. Rest in eternal peace, Lt Sahay—your light will never dim.
