PM Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump share a strong relationship and are working on a trade deal to enhance all aspects of their bilateral ties, says US Trade Representative.
New Delhi: United States Trade Representative (USTR) Ambassador Jamieson Greer, who visited India this week to advance the India-US trade deal, has said that India is a country on the move, as he reflected on India's growth, innovation, and ambition to lead in the technologies of the future.
As the United States and India deepen cooperation across trade, AI, and emerging technologies, the opportunities ahead continue to grow, he said after meeting Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal with a US delegation.
“India is transitioning from traditional agriculture and manufacturing to focusing on technology and AI, with an interest in collaborating with the US in future technologies and trade. The US-India relationship, particularly between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is strong and evolving, as seen in their recent meeting at the G7 in France,” said Greer.
“They are working on a trade deal and aim to enhance all aspects of their bilateral relationship, which is expected to continue to improve,” he added.
Trade deal sees ‘substantial progress’
The visit marked a key step in ongoing efforts to advance a balanced, mutually beneficial India–US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) and to finalize an interim deal in line with the joint statement of February 7, 2026.
Ambassador Greer held multiple rounds of discussions with Goyal. The two leaders conducted a comprehensive review of core BTA elements, including enhanced market access, digital trade, supply chain resilience, reduction of non-tariff barriers, and expanded cooperation in strategic sectors.
"We reviewed progress of the ongoing India–US trade discussions and explored avenues to further deepen our economic partnership," Goyal said in a post on X. "I appreciate Ambassador Greer’s leadership and the sustained efforts of both teams in advancing our discussions in a constructive and forward-looking manner," the minister noted.
Both sides noted substantial progress by negotiating teams in recent months and welcomed the momentum from successive technical and ministerial-level engagements. India remains committed to working constructively with the United States to further deepen economic ties and create new opportunities for growth and innovation, Goyal said.
