New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodriguez, with both sides reviewing bilateral relations and exploring ways to deepen cooperation in key sectors, including energy, trade and investment.

Rodriguez, who arrived in India this week for a five-day visit, is leading a high-level delegation comprising ministers responsible for foreign affairs, economy and finance, science and technology, communication and information, and transportation. The visit is aimed at expanding engagement across a broad range of sectors and strengthening the India-Venezuela partnership.

The discussions come at a time when India is increasing crude oil imports from Venezuela as it seeks to diversify energy supplies amid disruptions to global oil markets. Energy security featured prominently in the talks, with both countries exploring opportunities for enhanced cooperation in the sector.

India has significantly stepped up purchases of Venezuelan crude in recent months. According to industry data, India imported about 427,000 barrels per day of Venezuelan crude in May, making it one of the largest buyers of the South American nation’s oil.

During her visit, Rodriguez is also expected to meet senior Indian ministers and industry leaders, as well as visit energy-related facilities, underscoring the growing importance of the energy relationship between the two countries.

Officials said the visit reflects the shared commitment of India and Venezuela to broaden economic engagement and strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
