Washington, DC: The U.S. Department of Labor has appointed Indian American technology leader Mangala Kuppa as its Chief Information Officer, the agency announced on March 30.
In the role, Kuppa will lead the IT hub of the Department of Labor, which develops, maintains and protects IT solutions and data across 27 agencies to enable mission outcomes through technology and service.
A seasoned professional with over 25 years of experience in both the public and private sectors, Kuppa joined the Department of Labor in 2010 and has since served in multiple senior leadership positions, including Chief Technology Officer, Chief AI Officer, and Director of Technology, Innovation and Engineering.
She developed the Department's artificial intelligence strategies, established DOL's enterprise data platform, and advanced technological leadership through the adoption of low code/no code solutions.
She also oversees the Department's IT portfolio ensuring its alignment with the President's Management Agenda priorities, including cybersecurity resilience, digital transformation, legacy modernization, and accelerating the adoption of emerging technologies such as AI and quantum computing.
Before joining the Department of Labor, Kuppa spent more than a decade at the Bureau of Labor Statistics, where she held several leadership roles, including acting director, division chief and project manager. Earlier in her career, she worked in the private sector for nearly 15 years.
The Andhra native has a master's degree in computer science from SNDT University, Mumbai, India and a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Andhra University.
