Labor and AAPI Coalition condemns racist campaign mailer targeting Dr. Sion Roy

Thursday, 14 May, 2026

A series of negative mailers targeting Dr. Sion Roy in his race for California State Senate District 24 has prompted several statewide organizations, including SEIU California, UAPD Local 206, South Asians For America (SAFA), and Harris Mojadedi, Chair of the California Democratic Party AAPI Caucus, to release a joint letter highlighting the racist tactics deployed in the mailer.

“We condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the shamefully false and brazenly racist mailer that JobsPAC — bankrolled by the California Chamber of Commerce, Pacific Gas and Electric, Edison International, and Sempra — has dropped into the mailboxes of Senate District 24 families.

The mailer is built on a foundation of lies...[But] What wounds us [most] is the cruelty of the attack itself, and the racist dog whistle echoing beneath it. Dr. Roy, the only AAPI candidate in the race, has been depicted in ultra-high contrast to deliberately "darken" his skin. Let us be clear about what this is: a tired, ugly tactic pulled straight from the oldest playbook of political operatives who have spent generations trying to "other" non-white candidates and frighten voters into rejecting them. To see it deployed in 2026 by JobsPAC and the California Chamber is nothing short of disgraceful.”

The letter goes on to highlight the cruelty of the chief funders of the attack—PG&E, Edison, and Sempra—spending $400,000 to fund an attack on the only candidate in the race who lost their home in the Palisades Fire.
