U.S. Senator Charles Schumer announced the confirmation of Indian American Judge Sanket Jayshukh Bulsara to serve as a district judge on the prestigious United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Schumer forwarded the name of Sanket Bulsara for the Eastern District of New York to the Biden-Harris administration, President Biden nominated Judge Bulsara for the district judgeship, and Schumer championed his nomination.

“Sanket Bulsara is first-rate legal mind and a dedicated, talented public servant, who has served as a history-making Magistrate Judge in the Eastern District of New York since 2017. Judge Bulsara, the very first Indian-American to serve as a judge on that court, was General Counsel for the Securities and Exchange Commission where he worked to protect investors and the country’s financial markets. He is an expert in securities, contract, bankruptcy, and regulatory matters, but his experience also extends to representing incarcerated individuals, victims of domestic violence, and individuals on death row in pro bono cases,” said U.S. Senator Charles Schumer.

“Judge Bulsara has a broad range of experiences, from clerking for Hon. John G. Koeltl on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, to serving as Acting General Counsel for the Securities and Exchange Commission and developing a broad-based, trial-centered practice, to his current service as a Magistrate Judge in the Eastern District. This vast range of invaluable experiences will serve him well as a United States District Judge for the Eastern District of New York,” Schumer said.

“Sanket Bulsara is the epitome of the American Dream and a history maker: the child of hard-working immigrants from both India and Kenya, and the first South Asian American federal judge to serve on any court in the Second Circuit when he was appointed as a Magistrate Judge. I proudly recommended Judge Bulsara to President Biden and championed his nomination. I am confident he will bring remarkable legal talent and experience, as well as integrity and professionalism, to the district court. He will follow the law where it takes him, in the pursuit of fair and impartial justice,” Schumer added.

Senator Schumer is focused on bolstering the integrity, excellence, diversity and professionalism of our federal courts, while recommending candidates, like Judge Bulsara, who – as the proud son of immigrants from India and Kenya – represent the rich professional and demographic diversity of New York and the country. Senate Democrats, led by Senator Schumer, have made confirming President Biden’s judicial nominations a top priority – and have made history with the number of judges confirmed and the demographic and professional diversity of the nominees.

“New York’s South Asian population is one of the fastest growing in our state and in our country – so I am proud to support Judge Bulsara because he will make our courts a better reflection of the communities they serve,” Schumer said. “Judge Bulsara’s confirmation represents a milestone for the Senate: he is the 195th judge confirmed since President Biden took office, and we are going to keep going.”

Judge Bulsara has served as a U.S. Magistrate Judge in the Eastern District of New York since 2017. Prior to his judgeship, Bulsara was Acting General Counsel of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). He was the Deputy General Counsel for Appellate Litigation, Adjudication, and Enforcement at the SEC from 2015 – 2017. Bulsara was in private practice at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr in New York, and beginning in 2003 he was an associate at Munger Tolles & Olson in Los Angeles. He spent time at the Kings County (Brooklyn) District Attorney’s Office as a Special Assistant District Attorney, and was the Manager of Planning and Data Analysis in the New York City Department of Education, Division of Human Resources in Brooklyn. Bulsara was a law clerk for Judge John G. Koeltl on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York from 2002 – 2003. Bulsara earned a J.D., cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 2002 and an A.B., magna cum laude, from Harvard College in 1998.

Bulsara was born in the Bronx to immigrant parents before moving to New Rochelle and later Edgemont, New York. Bulsara’s parents immigrated over 50 years ago, his father worked for the City of New York as an engineer and his mother was a dedicated nurse. Bulsara lives in Long Island City with his wife, Christine DeLorenzo.
