San Jose, CA: Trailblazer Indian American community leader and former advisor to President Biden, Ajay Bhutoria, was bestowed the prestigious Award of Excellence by the Association of Indo Americans (AIA) in a heartfelt ceremony, recognizing his distinguished leadership and unwavering dedication to the Indian American community. The award was presented by Congressman Sam Liccardo, alongside San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, Assemblymember Ash Kalra, Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan, District Attorney Jeff Rosen, Deputy Consul General Rakesh Adlakha, and other esteemed elected officials and AIA leaders.

Bhutoria, deeply humbled by the honor, shared, “This recognition belongs not just to me, but to every voice in our community that stood united against division.” He extended a special thanks to AIA leaders Vijaya Aasuri, Ramesh Konda, Veeru Vuppala, and the entire team for their support.

The award celebrates Bhutoria’s pivotal role in securing Governor Gavin Newsom’s veto of SB 509, halting transnational repression, and his leadership in the veto of SB 403, protecting the community from caste-based division. Despite unanimous approval in both the Senate and Assembly, Bhutoria’s advocacy proved instrumental in these victories. His efforts in 2023 further solidified his reputation as a formidable force against divisive policies.

“These weren’t just policy wins. They were acts of defiance against forces that seek to fracture us,” Bhutoria stated. “We proved that when we stand together—unapologetic, unbreakable, and united—no divisive agenda can prevail.” He acknowledged the collective efforts of organizations like FIIDS, HAF, COHNA, and thousands of community volunteers in this triumph.

Bhutoria also expressed gratitude to Governor Newsom for supporting the unity of California’s communities and reaffirmed his commitment to future challenges, saying, “Grateful. Determined. Ready for the next fight.”

In a separate honor, Bhutoria was recognized by the Festival of Global and American Hindus, where Sunnyvale Mayor Larry Klein and Dr. Ramesh Japra presented him with an award for his advocacy in vetoing SB 403 and SB 509, safeguarding the community from divisive policies.
