Albany, NY: State Senator Jeremy Cooney commemorated India Day at the New York State Capitol this week, celebrating the rich cultural heritage and contributions of the Indian American community across New York State.

An immigrant from Kolkata, Senator Cooney sponsored a legislative resolution to celebrate India–USA relations, and collaborated with the Consulate General of India, New York, to host community and AAPI leaders.

The event marked the 79th anniversary of Indian independence and highlighted the shared democratic values between the United States and India.

"As an immigrant from Kolkata, India, it was an honor to help commemorate the 79th anniversary of Indian independence and the rich culture our community shares,: Senator Cooney wrote on X as he thanked the Consulate General of India in New York and AAPI leaders who joined him on the "important day".

The Indian consulate expressed "sincere gratitude" to Senator Cooney for sponsoring the adopted New York State Senate Resolution to proclaim August 15, 2026, as India Independence Day in New York State.

The India Day celebration at the Capitol comes amid growing recognition of Indian American heritage across the United States through cultural festivals, legislative resolutions, and public observances organized by local and state governments.

The Indian American community is among the fastest-growing immigrant groups in New York, with a strong presence in cities and suburbs across the state, including New York City, Long Island, Rochester, and the Capital Region.
