Dhaka: At least 2,000 alleged illegal Bangladeshi immigrants have been ‘pushed back’ across the border by Indian authorities since Operation Sindoor began in the early hours of May 7, according to a report.

The action was taken following a nationwide verification exercise along the Bangladesh border in Tripura, Meghalaya, and Assam, according to the report in The Indian Express.

The action began along the borders in Gujarat, which accounts for half of the illegal immigrants sent back to their country, the report said, quoting officials. Among other states, Delhi and Haryana have also sent back immigrants in large numbers. The immigrants have also been sent back to Assam, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan, according to the report.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh announced plans to send a fresh diplomatic note to India, raising concern over the alleged pushback of individuals across the border and urging New Delhi to adhere to established mechanisms for resolving such issues.

A Bangladesh tribunal indicted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her role in a violent crackdown against student-led protests. Mass murder charges were levelled against the ousted leader, with the prosecution accusing Hasina of exercising absolute authority to ruthlessly suppress the uprising. If convicted, Hasina could even face the death penalty.

An investigation report had reportedly found that Hasina “directly ordered” state security forces and her political party, as well as affiliated groups, to conduct operations that led to mass casualties. Sheikh Hasina was ousted late last year following a student-led uprising that left more than a thousand people dead or injured.
