Cricket to make debut at LA Olympics 2028: Six teams to vie for gold

Friday, 11 Apr, 2025

At the Los Angeles Olympics 2028, six teams will feature in each of the men’s and women’s categories as cricket makes it return at the Summer Games after a gap of 128 years. The organizers confirmed the number of participants on Wednesday.

Cricket last featured at the Olympics in the 1900 edition of the Games in Paris, where a one-off, two-day match between Great Britain and France was held, which is now recognized as an unofficial Test.

Cricket is among the five new sports that have been approved by The International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the LA Games. Besides cricket, baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes) and squash will also be part of the quadrennial spectacle.

Qualification criteria for the 2028 Games are yet to be confirmed for the cricket tournament but USA are likely to earn a direct spot at the quadrennial extravaganza as host nation, meaning only five teams will be allowed to make the cut through the qualification process.

Cricket will be played in the T20 format in Los Angeles.

Each team will name a squad of 15 players meaning 90 cricketers in each category will feature at the Olympics.
