On June 18, 2025, the New York State Assembly passed S.8344/A.8787, which renews the authorization of speed cameras in New York City for five years. The legislation, which passed the New York State Senate last Friday, is now expected to be delivered to New York Governor Kathy Hochul for her signature — prior to the expiration of the current law on July 1st.
New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez issued the following statement:
“The data is clear: speed cameras save lives, and their use has made our streets safer for everyone — reducing deaths and serious injuries wherever they are located. While one fatality is one too many, it is no coincidence that with the largest such network of cameras in the country, New York City is defying national rates of traffic fatalities.
“We want to acknowledge all the advocates — including Families for Safe Streets — which successfully fought for this renewal. And our special gratitude goes to Speaker Carl Heastie and Majority Leader Andrew Stewart-Cousins and the members of both houses who have so consistently supported the Adams administration’s hard-fought efforts to reach Vision Zero.”
