The restored version of  Shyam Benegal’s 1976 classic ‘Manthan’, starring late actor Smita Patil, was showcased at the Classic section of the 77th Cannes Film Festival. After getting positive responses at the film festival, the landmark film is set to be released in 50 cities and 100 cinemas across India on June 1 and June 2.

In an interview with IANS, actor Prateik Babbar said his mother, Smita Patil, would’ve been ‘incredibly proud’ of ‘Manthan’ Cannes screening. "This moment is deeply close for me as her son, having always regarded her as one of the greatest actresses in Indian cinema history".

Along with Prateik, veteran actors Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, Amul MD Jayen Mehta and Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, founder of the Film Heritage Foundation, attended the film's screening in France.

“Watching the restored 'Manthan' at its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival was a very emotional experience for me. I was overwhelmed by memories from almost fifty years ago when cinema was a vehicle of change and moved to tears by the standing ovation at the end, which was not just for myself but for the film which has more than stood the test of time and also for the beauty of the restoration," Naseeruddin Shah said in a statement posted on Hindustan Times.

The restored version will be released in Ahmedabad, Ambala, Amritsar, Anand, Bengaluru, Bhatinda, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Dehradun, and Delhi.
