India's VP pays tribute to late Iranian president Raisi; meets acting President

Tehran: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar met Iran's acting President Mohammad Mokhber here and conveyed condolences over the tragic demise of President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in a helicopter crash.

Leading the Indian delegation at the official funeral ceremony, Dhankar paid tributes to Raisi, Amir-Abdollahian, and other Iranian officials who died in the mishap. A day-long state mourning was observed across India on May 21 as a mark of respect for Raisi.

"Dhankhar paid tributes to late President Raisi, late Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian, and other Iranian officials in Tehran today," his office said in a post on X along with pictures of the event.

Separately, the External Affairs Ministry said in a post that Dhankhar met the Acting President of Iran, Dr Mohammad Mokhber, in Tehran and conveyed condolences on the tragic demise of President Raisi and Amir-Abdollahian. The funeral ceremony was presided over by Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei . Thousands of people attended the funeral procession of the late president and his companions.

Earlier, PM Narendra Modi conveyed his "heartfelt condolences" and said that Raisi’s contribution to fortifying India-Iran bilateral ties will always be remembered. External affairs minister, S Jaishankar, said he was “deeply shocked" to hear of the passing away of Iran’s President and Foreign Minister.

"Recall my many meetings with them, most recently in January 2024. Our condolences to their families. We stand with the people of Iran at the time of this tragedy,” Jaishankar wrote on X.
