Toronto: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to call a snap federal election for April 28, the Globe and Mail reported this week, citing sources. The announcement is anticipated on March 23, despite the next election originally being scheduled for October 20, the report mentioned.
Carney is reportedly looking to capitalize on the Liberal Party’s recent surge in the polls, which began in January after US President Donald Trump ramped up threats against Canada and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation.
Carney, a former central banker with no prior political or campaign experience, secured the Liberal leadership two weeks ago. He will face off against Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, an experienced politician. The Conservatives had been leading in polls until Trudeau’s resignation in January, which significantly shifted the political landscape.
Fifty-nine-year-old Carney is a former governor of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England and his background boasts of dealing with complex economic crises. The Liberal leader reportedly plans to reshape his Cabinet, with Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc shifting to the international trade portfolio and Innovation Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne taking over as Foreign Minister.
