As Americans commemorate the 248th Independence Day on July 4 this year, there is much for them to be proud of. The celebrations emanate from the sense of accomplishments and retaining the premier status of a superpower, especially when the country's GDP stands at $22.9 trillion making up about 25 per cent of the global economy. This proportion has remained relatively stable over the past six decades as it grew at the rate of 1.4 per cent amongst the 23 industry groups monitored by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).
From enduring democratic principles and social progress to technological innovation and global influence, the United States stands as a beacon of hope, resilience, and advancement. In times when China attempts to replace the US as a superpower, America's nominal GDP, in current US dollars, stands at $21.4 trillion, accounting for about 24 per cent of the global economy.
Historically, the US share of the global economy has nearly halved since 1960. In comparison, China’s GDP was valued at $17.96 trillion in 2022, according to the World Bank. This represents approximately 7.74 pr cent of the global economy. President Xi Jinping’s misadventure in the form of the Belt-and-Road Initiative is evolving into China’s first major overseas debt crisis, thus keeping America ahead of it.
Democratic principles and freedoms
At the heart of American pride is the nation's commitment to democratic principles and individual freedoms. The Declaration of Independence, signed on July 4, 1776, laid the foundation for a nation built on the ideals of liberty, equality, and justice. Over the past 248 years, these principles have been upheld and expanded, ensuring that the United States remains a land where freedom of speech, religion, and the press are protected, and where the rule of law prevails. In recent years, the resilience of American democracy has been tested, yet it has emerged stronger.
Social progress and inclusion
One of the most significant achievements worth celebrating is the progress made in social justice and inclusion. Over the past several decades, the United States has seen landmark changes that have expanded rights and opportunities for various marginalized groups. The civil rights movement of the 1960s laid the groundwork for ongoing efforts to achieve racial equality.
Additionally, the LGBTQ+ rights movement has achieved significant victories, including the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2015 and the increasing acceptance and protection of LGBTQ+ individuals in various aspects of society. The women's rights movement has also made great strides, advocating for gender equality and addressing issues such as wage disparity, reproductive rights, and workplace discrimination.
Global influence and leadership
The United States' influence on the global stage is another point of pride. As a leading advocate for democracy, human rights, and international cooperation, America plays a crucial role in shaping global policies and addressing international challenges. The nation's contributions to global health, disaster relief, and peacekeeping efforts highlight its commitment to making the world a better place. Moreover, American culture, including music, film, literature, and sports, has a profound impact worldwide, promoting values of freedom, creativity, and diversity. This cultural influence fosters mutual understanding and connects people across borders.
Technological innovation
The country's role as a global leader in technological innovation is another source of pride. It has been at the forefront of numerous technological advancements that have transformed the world. From the space race of the 1960s to the digital revolution of the 21st century -- American ingenuity has driven progress and improved lives.
In recent years, the tech industry has continued to thrive, with Silicon Valley remaining a hub for innovation. Breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, renewable energy, and space exploration are shaping the future and addressing some of the world's most pressing challenges. Companies like SpaceX, Tesla, and Google are not only pushing the boundaries of what is possible but also inspiring a new generation of innovators and entrepreneurs.
Environmental stewardship
In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on environmental stewardship and sustainability. The United States has made significant strides in addressing climate change and promoting renewable energy. Initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions, conserving natural resources, and protecting biodiversity are crucial steps to ensure a sustainable future.
Analysts opine that as Americans celebrate Independence Day, there is much to be proud of and celebrate. The enduring commitment to democratic principles and individual freedoms, significant social progress and inclusion, technological innovation, economic resilience, global influence, and environmental stewardship all highlight the nation's achievements and promise. These accomplishments reflect the spirit of independence and the values that define the United States, inspiring hope and confidence in the nation's future.
