NY City: Amish Doshi made history this month as the first South Asian and Indian American to serve as a judge in Queens, New York. He was formally inducted into the Civil Court of New York City, surrounded by colleagues, community members, friends, family, and elected officials.
“Words cannot express the honor and how humble I feel as I stand here before you as a judge of the Civil Court of New York City,” Doshi, a resident of Queens County for over 40 years, told the Queens Daily Eagle.
“If in 1982 when I first came to this country, when I was 10 years old, somebody said that I would be standing here as the first South Asian man to be elected [as a judge] in Queens, I would have called them delusional, at best.”
A tax lawyer and certified public accountant, Doshi was first nominated to serve on the bench ahead of the 2024 Democratic primary but was not elected. However, following a law passed last year to expand the number of positions in the Civil Court, he was elected in November 2024.
He graduated from Queens College and attained a Bachelor’s Degree, with a dual major in Mathematics and Accounting. Amish's journey took him to law school where he graduated from New York Law School. As per his website, public service has been Amish’s north star and that led him to work at the New York State Attorney General’s office, Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, and prior to that, he worked briefly at the Port Authority of NY & NJ, as a financial analyst.
