Washington, DC: Indian-American Suhas Subramanyam has won the Democratic primary for a Congressional seat in Virginia, defeating 11 other candidates including fellow Indian-American Krystle Kaul. The first Indian-American, South Asian and Hindu to be elected to the Virginia General Assembly in 2019 and to the Virginia State Senate in 2023, Subramanyam is running for the US House of Representatives from the 10th Congressional District of Virginia, which has a sizable Indian-American population.
Subramanyam, 37, was born in Houston to Indian-American parents who migrated to the US from Bengaluru. In 2015, he was appointed by the then President Barack Obama to serve as a White House technology policy advisor.
During his time in the Obama Administration, Suhas tackled some of the most challenging issues facing our nation, including addressing cybersecurity threats and modernizing government agencies so that they were better equipped to serve the needs of the American people.
After leaving the White House, Suhas started his own small business in Loudoun County and also served our community as a volunteer medic, EMT, and firefighter. In 2019, Suhas won a competitive four-way primary for the Virginia General Assembly. He is married to Miranda Pena Subramanyam, who volunteers in her free time at the Dulles South Food Pantry. They currently reside in Ashburn, Virginia with their 2 daughters.
