New Delhi: The First Session of the 18th Lok Sabha, which began on June 24  and concluded on July 2, 2024, achieved 103 per cent of the Parliament's productivity, Speaker Om Birla said. The session consisted of seven sittings spanning approximately 34 hours, according to the Lok Sabha Secretariat.

Birla informed the House that the discussion on the Motion of Thanks to the President's Address on 27 June lasted more than 18 hours, and 68 Members participated in it. In addition, 50 Members delivered speeches and the discussion concluded with the Prime Minister's reply on July 2.

Over the first two days, 539 members from both houses of Parliament took their oaths to join public office. The proceedings in the first session were marked by fiery speeches across the board. "Referring to the election of Lok Sabha Speaker held on June 26, Birla expressed gratitude for electing him as Speaker for the second time through voice vote," a media release said.

Issues such as the NEET-UG exam, paper leaks, the Agnipath scheme and Manipur, dominated the discussion. The Lok Sabha passed a resolution condemning Opposition's disruptions during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address, with Union minister Rajnath Singh saying these actions "shredded" parliamentary norms.
