Comic book shows Darth Vader as loving dad

Can you imagine the Star Wars villain playing a doting dad? Well, a new book, Darth Vader and Son by comic artist Jeffrey Brown re-imagines the Dark Lord of the Sith playing Lego and telling bedtime stories to a cute 4-year-old Luke Skywalker .

After Google rejected Brown's sketches of Darth Vader and his son, Luke Skywalker for a Father's Day Google Doodle, the author decided to expand the idea into a comic book.

He told L.A. Times' Hero Complex blog, "I thought of doing some sketches with Luke as a 4-year-old and Darth Vader teaching him how to ride a bike and trying to make him breakfast and trying to get him to go to bed. So I did a series of sketches for them to show, and in the end Google decided to go with a different concept. But that idea was so much fun. I really don't want to just let it disappear. So I asked them if I could take the idea and develop it into a full book, and they said, 'Go ahead.'"

Brown aims to depict the universality of fatherhood in the comic book.

"I think part of what was so fun about this idea is like, as a parent, there's things you just kind of have to put up with. They can be really frustrating. So the idea of this dark master, lord of the Sith, having all that power, and in the end, here's this 4-year-old who can be, "Eh, no Dad. I don't want to do it." And he's powerless against it. He's gotta maintain that presence of power in the universe, but when it's his own son, he has to rein it in a little bit. That tension is what was fun to play with", he told the blog.
