Priyanka Chopra to keynote SAMMA summit

New York: The Bollywood leading lady and internationally acclaimed recording artist, Priyanka Chopra, will deliver the keynote speech at the upcoming 4th annual South Asians in Media, Marketing and Entertainment (SAMMA) Summit.

The two-day networking conference - which starts on September 27 - at the Time Warner Global Headquarters and Conference Center here, is expected to attract South Asian leaders and innovators in digital media, television, film, advertising, marketing and entertainment.

“I am honored to be speaking at SAMMA, and I am humbled by the great impact of Indians in US and global entertainment and media, whether that is in digital media, television or music,” said Priyanka Chopra in a press release. “As creative artists and industry leaders, it is important to help open the world’s eyes to the great contributions Indians make to these industries and help pave the way for fellow South Asians.”

Although Indian actors like Mindy Kaling are getting meaty roles on American TV, there is still underrepresentation of Indians in the entertainment world and SAMMA is bridging this gap by partnering with major TV networks to create new opportunities for South Asian actors. This will be first such initiative ever where ABC casting will host an actor audition workshop exclusively for South Asians at the event.

“By partnering with companies with a strong belief in culturally relevant programming, we hope to open more doors for South Asian actors as well as serve as a great voice for the power of diversity,” said Summit co-chair Radha Mehta.

An impressive lineup of speakers including Dr. Mehmood Khan, chief innovations and science officer at PepsiCo and Keli Lee, head of casting at ABC Entertainment, are slated for the event.

Other participants and panelists at SAMMA Summit 2013 include: Janina Gavankar – Actor, Bobby Sharma – SVP, Corporate Strategy, IMG Worldwide, David Taghioff – VP, Development, Creative Artists Agency (CAA), Jaideep Janakiram – SVP, North America, Sony Entertainment Television, Anjula Acharia Bath – CEO, DesiHits! Universal.
